Resum: Les nostres contribucions anteriors a aquest tema s’han centrat en problemes de taxonomia, que de fet encara no s’han resolt de forma definitiva, principalment: què és un vampir? Quines són les subespècies? Com distingir-los d’altres éssers demoníacs? Donat que el vampir folklòric varia segons el lloc i el moment, quins són els elements essencials en qualsevol anàlisi de components? Aquestes qüestions les vàrem tractar amb cert detall en el llibre The Darling (1989). Ara bé, la nostra anàlisi en general es basa principalment amb materials anteriors a la Segona Guerra Mundial publicats a Сборник за народни умотворения и народопис, ja siguin búlgars o macedonis.

Però de forma més recent s’han publicat dues noves col·leccions de narracions populars que contenen textos sobre vampirs, un a Bulgària d’Evgenija Miceva Невидими нощни гости (1994); i, l’altre, a Macedònia, més especialitzat, Narodna demonologija na Makedoncite de Tanas Vražinovski (1995). Aquestes recents publicacions aporten nou valuós material el qual ha estat recollit durant aquest darrer mig segle.

Aquí limitarem els nostres comentaris a la funció, particularment a la funció social, el paper del qual varia segons el lloc i el moment des del tabú forçador d’allò negatiu a allò inductor/reductor d’ansietat. A més, les dades no s’extreuen de tota Eslàvia, sinó que es limita al darrer material búlgar i macedoni disponible, el qual fàcilment dóna fe d’una tradició vampírica eslava meridional. Material corroborat serbi es pot trobar a Казиваља о нечастивим сияамаn de Radoslav Randenković (1991).

Abstract: We prior contributions to the vampire topic have centered on problems of taxonomy, which are yet to be definitively resolved, namely: What is a vampire? What are its sub-species? How is it distinguished from other daemons? Given that the folkloric vampire varies in time and space, what are the essential elements in any componential analysis? These issues were taken up in some detail in our book, The Darkling (1989). However, previous studies of Bulgarian and Macedonian vampires, including our own, have been based primarily on preWorld War II materials published primarily in the Сборник за народни умотворения и народопис, be they Bulgarian or Macedonian.

But more recently demonological folk narratives containing vampire texts have appeared in print, one in Bulgaria Evgenija Miceva's Невидими нощни гости (1994) and the other in Macedonia: Tanas Vražinovski  more specialized Народна демонологија на Македоните (1995). These recent publications provide valuable new material which has been gathered during the latter half of this century.

Here we are limiting our remarks to function, particularly social function, which varies through space and time in roles that range from taboo enforcer to negative role model, to anxiety inducer/reducer. In addition, the data are drawn not from all of Slavdom, but, more narrowly, from the latest available Macedonian and Bulgarian material, which readily attests to a currently surviving South Slavic vampire tradition. Corroborating Serbian material can be found in Radoslav Randenković Казиваља о нечастивим сияамаn (1991).
